Good Read and Quote of the Week

Today Lauren from Pure Style Home posted this great article on the reality check of what it costs to furnish a room and what quality you are going to get for your money.  This is not meant to be a discouragement but a way for clients to appropriately budget and set their expectations for how the amount of money you have to spend directly correlates with the look you are going to get and the quality of the items in your room.  Check it out!

Baby Shower # 1

My wonderful friend Kristin threw me an amazing baby shower at the end of October.  Kristin just posted these great pictures from the shower on her blog and I thought I’d share them here too!

I loved all of her beautiful and creative details!

Instead of shower games we worked on crafting some alphabet letters for a wall I’m doing in the nursery.  So fun!

DIY Paintings

I wanted to create some art for the nursery and I liked the idea of silhouette art.  Since our baby isn’t born yet, I knew I couldn’t use his face as seen in typical silhouettes, so I chose three boyish images to use as my subjects: a motorcycle, a truck and an airplane.

Here’s how they turned out:

Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: Search google images for a truck, motorcycle, and airplane.  Trying to find an image that is shot straight on is hard but with enough searching you can find one.  I also wanted them to have a simple outline/shape so I used images of toys instead of the real thing.

Step 2: Print out images and outline the subject darkly with a pencil.

Step 3: Turn the penciled side of the image face down onto a blank art canvas and color over the entire backside of the paper with pencil.  No need to be perfect, just scribble over it with pencil until the outline of the image transfers over to the canvas.

Step 4: Paint over the penciled outline with acrylic craft paint and fill in with paint.  I ended up doing three coats of paint to get the desired coverage that I wanted.

That’s it!  It was super easy and cheap and fun to do.  I love that I am able to add some personal touches and things that I created to baby’s nursery.

An Easy Lamp Update

While working on the nursery, I tried to think of little ways to make it more custom without spending a lot of money.  One of the ways I did that was with the lamp.  I was looking for the perfect orange to go in the nursery and let me tell you, orange is very hard to find.  Sure there is the Halloween orange, the hunter’s orange, the red-orange, and the flaming fluorescent orange.  But try to find the perfect shade of muted orange and you are out of luck.  While I was out shopping at Target one day, I came across their basic dorm section and saw this lamp with the perfect orange lampshade.  So for $14 I picked it up and figured I could do something to dress it up a bit or put the shade on a different base, like this fun owl one.

Basic Target Lamp, glue gun, pom-pom trim

Step 1: Hot glue the trim around the base of the shade.  Use a thin line of glue and push the trim down around the edge. Work fast because the glue dries quickly.

Step 2:Work your way around the entire lamp shade with the trim until it’s all glued down.

Step 3: Check out how the trim hangs.  I had to go back and straighten out some trim so it hung better.

Finished product!

I like the way it combines the colors of the nursery together and just jazzes up a plain lampshade a bit.

How do you jazz up a plain lampshade?  I’d love to see any of your ideas!

Nursery Closet {Before}

One thing I’d really like to get done for the nursery is a new closet design.  So I used AutoCAD to come up with a new closet layout that will help us to stay more organized and use up all the available closet space.  One of my biggest pet peeves is poorly designed closets and wasted space.  So here’s the before shot of the closet:

Not a whole lot of usable space there on the top shelf.

And here’s my new plan:

And here’s a more detailed description of what will go where:

Hopefully this new closet design will make the best use of space and allow us to store all of baby’s many items!  I’ll be sure to show you the after photos as soon as it gets finished!

A few things to keep in mind when re-designing a closet layout:

-What do you need to store in the closet?  Big stuff, little stuff?  What are the dimensions of the items you need to store?

-What is the best way to use all the available space?  By creating smaller spaces for baskets and boxes or making sure to have enough hanging space for coats and jackets?

-Is is just function and storage that is important to you or do you want to create a beautiful closet as well?

-Will you be leaving the closet doors open most of the time for easy access to items or will the doors be closed until it’s necessary to get something out?

Very ROUGH Nursery Design Board

Here is something I threw together at the end of last week with a few key elements I’m wanting for the nursery.  Still a long ways to go and I still have lots of little details to pick out like fabric for the crib sheet (won’t be solid orange like shown) and customizing the curtains more than just that striped fabric shown.  This is just to show the basic idea of what I’m thinking but don’t be surprised if it turns out very different!!
